The Big Apple on permanent exhibit in the American Airlines Terminal of JFK, New York
Eunice Kennedy Shriver donated a stunning monumental apple sculpture by Romero Britto to John F. Kennedy International airport to welcome millions of travelers around the world to New York, dedicated on July 8th, 2011. The sculpture, appropriately, is stationed right in front of the "Welcome to New York" sign in the American Airlines terminal. Airport staff and travelers posed for pictures with the sculpture, as Britto warmly greeted all of them and spoke of the tremendous inspiration the late Mrs. Shriver and his dear friend Anthony Kennedy Shriver and his wife Alina have provided to him through Shriver's organization for people with intellectual disabilities, Best Buddies. Images of Britto's monumental "Apple" sculpture are now part of a traveler's collective consciousness, as the sculpture enters the historical record as a stunning example to Britto's "Art of Happiness" and a testament to both his and Mrs. Shriver's longstanding commitment to service.
