November 4th, 2014 | Romero Britto in Mexico City, Puebla, Tlaxcala
World renowned Pop Artist Romero Britto had a whirlwind week in Mexico that took him through Mexico City, Puebla, and Tlaxcala.
On the first day of his Mexico visit, Mr. Britto was a guest at the Mexican television show El Hormiguero on TV Azteca. He was joined by the funny and charismatic ant puppets Pichas y Cachas and actively participated in different segments that included painting a giant ant, putting together a Britto puzzle, and guessing whether the masterpieces shown were created by a child or an adult.
That night, Mr. Britto was a guest of honor at Ms. Pepita Serrano's SIVAM Anniversary Gala, held at the Soumaya Museum. The night was beautiful, filled with red roses, art, lovely people, and an exhilarating opera by Puccini.
The next morning was packed with back to back interviews! Men's Health and Fitness, Cosmopolitan, Architectural Digest, and Life and Style were among the publications that asked Mr. Britto all about his life, inspirations, influences and plans for Mexico. He closed his interviews by filming a public service announcement for the Carlos Slim Foundation's Heroes por La Vida, an initiative encouraging Mexican citizens to donate organs.
Then it was off to Puebla, where Mr. Britto and a special group of VIPs were hosted at El Desafuero, en Puebla, thanks to the Torre Family of Grupo Textil Providencia and Casa de Los Sue'os. The collectors asked lots of questions, heard funny stories, and had the opportunity to spend one on one time with the artist.
The last day in Mexico was filled with activity. A visit to Grupo Textil Providencia was arranged, where Mr. Britto was presented with exciting new licensing ideas and was given a tour of their in-house museum. The artist learned about where different fibers such as wool, linen, and polyester come from, and how they are made into textiles. Then, it was off to the Tlaxcala State House.
Mr. Britto was the guest of honor at a special lunch, hosted at the state home of Mr. Mariano Gonzalez Zarur, the Governor of Tlaxcala. There, along with the Torre family, the guests enjoyed Mexican delicacies prepared by the on- site kitchen staff. The governor was presented with a beautiful original piece, a pair of wings painted and embellished by Mr. Britto. The gesture was reciprocated by the governor, as he gifted Mr. Britto with beautiful Talavera pottery, and gave him a tour of the state home?s art collection.
Evening came and the tour was closed with the final event of the week, the grand opening of Casa de Los Suenos at the Angelopolis Mall in Puebla. A moving speech by Mr. Britto brought Mr. Jose Antonio Torre, GM of Grupo Textil Providencia and owner of Casa de Los Suenos to tears. Mr. Britto explained the importance of values and family, something that he has always admired about the Torres. Everyone then was invited to the front, where the ribbon cutting took place, with a confetti explosion finale. Collectors enjoyed looking at the beautiful art and taking pictures with the artist.
The tour was a short yet exciting one and Mr. Britto is looking forward to making many more memories in the beautiful country of Mexico.
